Institute of Technology, Madras is one of the premier institutions of
national importance in higher technical education, basic and applied research.
It was established in 1959 by the Government of India in collaboration
with the German Government. IIT Madras is a residential institution with
nearly 460 faculty members, 5000+ students and 1250 administrative and
supporting staff. It is a self-contained campus of about 630 acres located
in a beautiful wooded land with flora and fauna. The campus was established
in a natural forest that formed a part of the Guindy National Park. IIT
campus has about 300 varieties of trees and plants with quite a large
number of native wild species. The Institute has sixteen academic departments
and a few advanced research centers in various disciplines of engineering,
pure sciences, humanities, social sciences and management, with nearly
100 laboratories organized in a unique pattern of functioning. The campus
is located in the city of Chennai, previously known as Madras. It is conveniently
located at a distance of 12 km from the airport, with domestic and international
terminals next to each other, and 15 km from the railway station. |
